To enhance communication in key areas of the store without adding noise, IKEA installed Akoustic Arts’ Speaker B directional speakers in selected zones. These speakers are used both with displays and as standalone audio points to deliver focused, localised sound - heard only by customers standing in the right place. They broadcast short explanatory messages about IKEA’s scenographic choices, such as why a specific piece of furniture was selected for a particular space. This subtle audio layer adds context and storytelling, helping visitors better understand layout decisions and product functionality.
Whether triggered while sitting on a designated sofa or exploring a thematic area, the sound remains contained and private - no enclosed spaces required. This allows IKEA to guide customers through its product storytelling in a personal and informative way, without needing extra staff or contributing to noise pollution. Directional sound becomes a discreet communication tool, enriching the customer journey without disrupting the store environment
